I am a senior attending pediatric emergency at Mt. Sinai Morning Side. I wanted to bring your attention about one of your staff Ms.Owen. I had a resuscitation case, 2 years old, status epilepticus. Julia was present in the ER with the child as a stranger. The babysitter got scared when the child had a seizure and ran to the street with the child in her arms after dialing 911. Julia was passing by and saw the child with the babysitter, actively seizing, and escorted the child to the ER and helped us to stabilize the child. Initially I thought she was the mother when I saw that she was very much involved in the care and realized that she was just helping out the babysitter and the child as a human being who works in health care.

Both parents were out of town for a wedding and both are orthopedic staff. This is the first time they left the child alone with the babysitter to attend her brother’s wedding. I want to recognize Julia’s timely help as a stranger to the babysitter and the child with calm demeanor, excellent rapport with staff, and stayed with the child the entire time until he was stable. We need people like Julia in healthcare which is slowly disappearing/decreasing due to various reasons including pandemic. I have been working in peds ER for 30 years and my interaction with Julia was outstanding, especially caring for a stranger. I wish Julia all the best in her personal and professional life to achieve very high!
