Recently, I had an appointment with lactation specialist, Karen Strube. She went the extra mile when she noticed my newborn was breathing fast and had not been gaining as much weight as his twin brother and called in a NICU nurse to look at him. She could have easily brushed this off, as he had been gaining weight, voiding normally and had good color and we had an appointment with his pediatrician the next day.
She quickly called over to his pediatrician's office and was able to get us in to take a peek at him. I'm very grateful she did. He ended up being admitted and then transferred to Children's Hospital. My newborn son had coarctation of the aorta and had heart surgery the very next day. Thankfully his defect was not so advanced that his organs were decompensating yet.
All the staff at Children's Hospital mentioned how she should be lactation specialist of the year for catching my son's heart defect and taking action. I am so utterly grateful for the incredible difference this woman made in our lives. Had I gone to the doctor the next day, I am fearful that my concerns would have been dismissed and we could still be ignorant of his heart defect or worse. You are lucky to have such a wonderful woman working for you. Thank you all so much. There are not enough words in the world to use to express my gratitude to all who provided my son care.
