This week, in the ICN, was a difficult and emotional week. Having a high census and acuity is expected but having a death is heart-rending. One of our babies, who was 19 days old, passed away suddenly in Central nursery. Losing a baby is so difficult but when it is unexpected, as in this case, it is even worse. His mom, as one would expect, was hysterical. She was crying, yelling, and blaming everyone for the death of her son. Even though everyone knew the truth, it is really difficult to hear and be able to continue on with the tasks that need to be done when a baby dies. Katie was caring for her own babies in the South nursery. Everyone was aware of the sudden death of this baby because the mom, family and the staff were crying in Central nursery. Katie came into central nursery to help everyone, especially Alice who was caring for this baby and family. Katie is on our bereavement committee within the ICN and really shared her expertise with knowing how to complete the paper work and how to help the families grieve and say good-bye to their baby. Katie went into our family center with Alice, Dr. Wade, and the family. She was instrumental in completing paperwork, footprints, pictures, all while offering support to the family and Alice, her friend and colleague. Katie's response when I thanked her for helping Alice through all of this while she still cared for her own babies was, "I should have switched assignments with Alice". That was a remarkable statement, which truly showed how selfless and caring Katie is and why I want her to be recognized with The DAISY Award.
