I witnessed Kim going above and beyond demonstrating care and compassion to a family dealing with an unexpected and difficult situation. A young boy came into the PACU department on the weekend via EMS with his mother from another hospital. The patient came for an emergent ruptured appendicitis and he was feeling very ill. While admitting the patient and getting him off to surgery, Kim learned of their situation. The mother and her family were on a trip, they lived out of town. When their son became sick, they headed to the nearest hospital. They only had one vehicle and other children to care for. The patient's father had to stay with the other children while the mother and son were transported via EMS with only the clothes on their backs to our hospital. Once here, the mother had no form of transportation and none of the basic needed necessities. They were told by the doctor that the boy would need to be admitted for a few days on IV antibiotics. Kim went out of her way to reach out to the mother and offer to help out however needed. The next day Kim arrived to work with a care package with some basic necessities, snacks and some activities to pass the time while she was here. She also checked in to see how they were doing and if there was anything else she could do to help. Kim stated she has been in a similar situation and she knows how difficult it can be. She is an amazing nurse, she listens to her patients and makes them feel that they are not alone. I was very impressed by her response to this situation.
