I found myself in the presence of a nurse who helped me get through the night, though she was helpful and kind, I didn't see much of her since I was heavily medicated. Early Sunday morning, the nurses debriefed and I was introduced to the kindest, most professional, attentive, caring, loving, compassionate, sympathetic nurse I have ever met. She introduced herself with a very optimistic, positive, energetic, and motivational manner that gave me a sense of support for once in this long journey. Upfront she told me she was going to push my limits for the simple fact that she knew I was going home alone and she was going to prepare me as best as she could to ensure that I would do well in my transition home. I told her about the discomforts of being attached to IVs, pressure cuffs, and all those other nuisance apparatuses and she told me what I had to do in order to get them off and explained in depth why I had them on in the first place. As an incentive, I began to hydrate myself as best as possible to get the Foley removed, I continued to do as advised to get where I needed to. There were lots of moments that would have been very uncomfortable and private but she handled them with such professionalism and never in a disgusted manner. She provided a sense of comfort and ease and took the shyness away instantly. Not only did she visit more than her hourly checks, but she was constantly showing up to make sure I didn't need help getting out of bed, re-positioning, in pain, helped me walk, you name it, she provided it, with joy and willingness. Not to mention I was alone for the majority of my labor but also for the post-partum aspect of it as well. Being alone limited my ability to sleep and shower but she was there to save the day. She allowed me to do so by watching over the baby while I squeezed in 30 minutes of sleep here and there. I was thankful I could finally shower while she looked over my precious baby and to top it all off she did it with love, devotion, and willingness. Last but not least she taught me how to properly carry my son, taught me some soothing carrying techniques when they're too fussy, taught me how to swaddle, change a diaper, the list goes on and on. She became my mother-mentor and I can't thank her enough for it.
