I was a patient on the JRC for a total hip replacement and my experience was exceptional in every way. Kudos to the outstanding team of nurses, care partners and therapists that work there! I would like to recognize 2 nurses in particular:
Lauren Stewart is a wonderfully caring and compassionate nurse and those qualities were evident in every interaction with me and my family. From the moment I was admitted to the JRC I felt completely safe and cared for. This was important to me especially since my senses were a bit off due to the outstanding pain management I received! When Lauren was in my room she was completely present, nothing was too big or small for her to handle. Her gentle spirit was calming and never once did I feel the need to worry or question what was going on. She always remembered to ask me about pain, if I needed anything and to offer toileting. She did not assume that just because I am a nurse I knew and understood everything. Her explanations were consistent, clear and concise. She could have written the book on relationship based care! Lauren brings our mission to life and makes me proud to be a part of the DPHC Nursing team.
Emily Brame was equally caring and compassionate. As soon as I met her I knew I was in good hands on the night shift. It was obvious that she was genuinely concerned for my safety and comfort. I was particularly impressed with how she quietly came into my room to check on me, using a soft voice to let me know it was time for VS, labs. She consistently grouped tasks so she wouldn’t disturb me unnecessarily. She answered my call light promptly and made me feel like I was her number one priority. Emily was proactive with pain management, she provided explanations regarding med options and included me in those decisions. She truly possesses a servant heart and it is obvious that caring for others is her calling. DPHC is a better place because of Emily.
It should also be noted how well these two nurses worked together. Their bedside report was fantastic and inclusive of me, they consistently used the white board to communicate my daily plan and made sure I knew who my clinical partner was. Every aspect of their care was perfect. They deserve the highest accolades and are truly worthy of the DAISY Award.
