Laurie works in triage for a neurology clinic and recognized that a family was having a hard time following recommended medication instructions. The patient has epilepsy and was having several seizures. The patient was started on Lamictal per provider recommendations. Lamictal is a medication that, if taken incorrectly or the dose is increased too quickly, can cause a severe rash. The parents had also refused care coordination multiple times to help navigate care.
To assist the family, Laurie created a calendar that showed what the Lamictal dose should be each day for multiple months and each week was highlighted to represent an increase in dosing. She sent one copy to the home, one copy was left at her desk and one copy was given to the provider. She makes a call to the family every Monday to review the schedule with the parents and makes sure they completely understand what they are to be doing. She went above and beyond for this family and because of her the patient is taking the correct dose of medication and is on the right path.
