Leslie is a true patient advocate. She recently intervened when she received report on a pediatric psychiatric patient who was under a PEC in the ED. Leslie approached the ER physician regarding this patient having cerebral palsy, a vp shunt and the need for re-evaluation from the ER doc and psychiatrist via telepysch as her exhibited behavior is expected in this patient population. The patient was re-evaluated which ultimately led to her getting discharged home with her grandmother after 5 days of being in the ED. The telepsych MD stated that when a patient is intellectually challenged, PEC is not the best option and the behavior can be caused by many other things such as this patient's vp shunt malfunctioning. Leslie educated ER staff on the importance of advocating for the psychiatric population especially when it's a child who cannot speak for themselves. The child's grandmother stated she was unaware of the patient being in the ER and that if she had known she would have attempted to intervene herself as she is very familiar with the challenges associated with caring for this particular patient. Leslie ensured that this patient received the best outcome possible.
