My son, E, was born in April at 36-weeks gestation via an emergency C-section. He was born with a fetal hemorrhage and a blood level of 2. E was transported to Dell Children's where Luc Vezina was one of the first people to start caring for him.
My husband understandably was in disarray and shock and Luc helped talk him through the process and was a calm, confident reassuring voice throughout that first day, and then every day since. E was cooled for 72 hours and Luc wanted to be with us on his warming day, so he took on an additional 12-hour shift to be with our family during that transitional time.
Luc would explain to me/us so we understood what was going on. He answered all our questions, he helped ease the stress by getting to know our family and could joke with us and bring a smile to our face. He was there when we cried or were scared, and he was reassuring when we needed it. I never for one millisecond questioned the care E was getting when was at Dell, but especially while he was being cared for by Luc.
I cannot think of a more deserving person to receive this award. Luc will forever have a special place in my heart, be a part of our family and thank you will never be enough for helping to save E's life. We are so grateful.

My grandson was transported to the NICU due to his emergency birth which was due to maternal-fetal hemorrhage. Luc was his nurse the first 4 days, requiring critical care/cooling bed, etc. The expertise, compassion, attention to detail in care, explanations of all that was occurring to the parents, and the family, intense monitoring as our baby went through critical life-threatening event after event for days and days was phenomenal! I am a retired NICU nurse and Luc was an incomparable model of what all NICU nurses should be.
Without reiterating all the criteria for this award, I will simply say that Luc excels at each and every criteria. It was with immense peace, comfort, and confidence in his care and interactions that I lived with each day our grandson was here! Words cannot begin to express the gratitude I feel towards Luc's care.

My son was born not breathing and without most of his blood. He was transported from Seton Main to Dell Children's NICU. Luc helped calm me down as soon as we arrived and delivered excellent care to my son. He obviously brought deep personal connections and passion to the job.
My son had to be in a cooling blanket for the first 3 days of life to reduce his chances of brain damage. During this time, Luc worked continuously to carefully monitor and serve E and explain to and comfort a very emotional father. After 72 hours, E was ready to be warmed and Luc took an extra shift to be present for the crucial procedure. It went extremely well and saved our son's life. Luc continued to stop by and visit us even when not assigned to E. He became a trusted friend and member of our family during our two weeks in the NICU. We will keep in touch and never forget him. Luc is the best!

Our grandson, E, suffered an extreme fetal hemorrhage and following an emergency C-section at 36 weeks gestation his survival was highly doubtful. Upon being transferred to Dell Children's NICU, Luc was his RN for the first 3 days. E was on the cooling protocol and Luc gave up his day off and came in to initiate the warming protocol. His level of knowledge and skills, his quiet presence, his reassurance to the family and quiet instructions to E's father to let him have some hands-on with E was so calming.
We never doubted that E was given the best of care. The continuity that Luc provided, along with Dr. H and Dr. M was so reassuring. As E had setbacks and then recovered so rapidly, Luc always stopped by to check in on his status and chat with the family. His presence, his willingness to spend time and reassurance, his professionalism. We believe Luc is a big part of why E not only survived but also thrived during his fifteen days in the NICU. We consider E's survival God's gift. We will never forget E's dramatic start in life and we will be eternally thankful for his care!
