Mary T. Cavanaugh, BSN, RN, MCCU clinical charge nurse at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital was nominated by a nursing colleague who shared a story about Mary and the exceptional care she provided for a recent patient.
According to the letter, the patient had a cardiac arrest at his home. His wife initiated CPR and he was taken to a local hospital in New Jersey. At the family’s request the patient was transferred to Jefferson’s MCCU. Critically ill, he stayed on the unit for about two weeks. During his stay his wife visited daily and relied on family and friend to drive her to Jefferson from New Jersey.
“Mary realized the hardships this family was facing, daily bridge tolls, parking and meal expenses, traveling back and forth to the Hospital,” the nominator wrote. “On top of this, one of the patient’s sons was getting married in the next week. Mary suggested the family take the PATCO train line to make the commute easier and less stressful. She was ready with a schedule and guidance. She also went so far as to give the family eight meal tickets she had earned for working holidays.”
The family was extremely grateful for Mary’s generosity and concern. “Professional and compassionate, Mary provides excellent care for her patients and their families,” the nominator stated. “She is a nursing role model”.
