My mother recently was placed in the ICU due to a massive loss of blood during treatment for a stomach ulcer. She was stable all day long. Everyone seemed confident she was on the mend. That's when disaster struck! She suddenly started vomiting blood. Somehow, she had the presence of mind to push the button for the nurse, Bebe, who had been an attentive nurse all day. She took care of my mother with reassurance and excellent care.
But this night, for my family, Bebe was an angel who not only was an advocate for my mother, but an important member of a team of professionals who brought my mother back from the edge. She worked long past her established day, attending to mother's critical needs and my own fears, making sure she was monitored and documented for the next nurse.
Most importantly, my mother upon regaining her strength recalled hearing Bebe's voice throughout it all. One strong voice who called my mother back to us. We are forever grateful.
