My husband was hospitalized for 2 ½ weeks. He suffered from several complications. I credit May Tanaka for her suburb nursing care with my husband's improvement. She was the only person who understood that a patient with an ileus and SBO be kept NPO. Not even his attending physician knew this!
May told my husband that he could not eat or drink while she was his nurse and she was firm with him about this. I wanted to hug and kiss her for doing what needed to be done. After her compassionate and knowledgeable care, he began to "turn a corner". May is responsible for the improvement of his condition. Her kindness and gentleness gave both my husband and me a great deal of comfort during a painful, stressful ordeal. She was attentive to my husband's every need. She didn't hesitate when he called for help. Her kind, pleasant attitude gave me confidence. I was even at peace enough so, to be able to sleep after several days of no sleep.
May didn't hesitate to gently clean my husband after vomiting frequently. When the obstruction began to resolve, she was steadfast in cleaning him after almost constant incontinent loose stools. She wouldn't allow me to help when I offered, and I felt sad that she was being overworked with my husband's complex needs.
May patiently served him, and never once did she display any sign of frustration. He told me that he was so appreciative of her. He felt sorry for her having to spend so much time cleaning his watery stools. Her attitude was always kind, humane, and respectful. My husband told her that he wished that all his nurses were like her. May personifies a knowledgeable, proficient, compassionate and hardworking nurse! She was our "angel". We were thankful every time she was his nurse. May is a credit to the nursing profession. She's the best! Thank you from our hearts.
