A patient who was a truck driver from another city was involved in a motor vehicle accident that rendered his truck inoperable secondary to his having no insurance. The patient was charged a $2400 fine and had no money to pay. He lost his commercial truck driver's license and his job. The court refused to allow the truck driver to serve jail time to rectify the fine, so he ended up homeless, jobless, and without clothes or blood pressure medications. The truck driver ended up coming to the hospital with a hypertensive crisis.

While in dire straits, his girlfriend in the other city had been unwilling to help him by sending his clothes and personal effects. She took his money and ran off with another man. The patient wanted to leave against medical advice (AMA) so he could get a job to earn money to pay his fine, but the nurses and doctors talked him out of it.

Within a few days, the patient was ready to be discharged but felt vulnerable about his situation, and expressed suicidal ideations to the nursing staff. Immediately, Michelle was notified and went to see the patient. After hearing the patient's story, Michelle contacted her team about available resources in the area. George arranged for a place where the patient could live at a minimal cost and have his clothes sent to him while he found employment. Lisa helped the patient fill out the necessary application forms and worked with her resources to obtain transportation to the house. Heather worked with a local low-cost clinic to find vouchers for the patient to get medications and obtain clothing before leaving the hospital.

As a result of the team's efforts, the truck driver recovered physically, financially, and spiritually from their intervention.
