My mom came in today for a urology procedure. She was extremely anxious and nervous. Once we were in preop, a sweet nurse named Mindy Smith came in to do some registration with my mom. Mindy was so personable and really focused on my mom as a person, not just a patient. She asked my mom meaningful questions, and in a short span of time, my mom shared some important stories about her life. One of those stories was how she met my dad while working at Disneyland during her college years. After about 20 minutes of chatting with Mindy, my mom seemed so much more relaxed, and we were all laughing. About 10 minutes after Mindy left, she came back with a surgical hat that she had turned into a Mickey Mouse hat with pink Minnie Mouse ears and my mom's name on the back! We were all crying laughing! The surgeon loved it and said she could wear it during the procedure! All this to say, Mindy was wonderful and should be celebrated for exemplifying excellence in the kind care she showed my mom and me in how she cared for her!
