The complexity and severity of injuries that send patients to the Emergency Department require medical staff to remain focused and calm amid unrelenting pressure. Treating the injuries, however, is only a part of the equation. DAISY Award honoree Nicole, demonstrated that emergency care extends beyond the patient on the operating table.
Nicole deftly handled a distraught family whose child found himself in the Emergency Department during a family vacation. I watched Nicole turn around a family on the brink, in a situation they never imagined themselves in.
"A nurse's job can be very nerve-wracking," says Nicole, who has worked in the facility's Emergency Department for the last nine years. "But in a situation when families are stressed, it's my job to stay composed to help not only the patient, but also family members."
