Our nurses and CNAs not only take excellent care of their patients but also of each other. Our postpartum team is a tight-knit group of women. Together we celebrate new babies, weddings, graduations, birthdays, and promotions and also support one another through times of need.
At the end of November, one of our CNAs suffered the unexpected loss of her husband. When the staff heard of this heartbreaking news they immediately jumped into action asking what could be done for C and her two young children. People offered to cook and deliver meals and leave time was donated, but the staff wanted to do more. Cate, one of our night shift RNs suggested Christmas gifts for the kids. Losing her husband and dealing with that grief was clouding the joy and motivation to shop and prepare for the holidays. The staff loved the idea that we could bring some happiness and magic to this family, even if for a day. Soon our classroom was filled with toys and gifts. The wrapped gifts were delivered so that C could put them under the tree for Christmas morning. Her children were thrilled.
Our staff continued to give love and support to C as she came back to work. She was able to take the leave she needed with the donated time, as she was new to the unit and hadn’t had much saved up. No matter the longevity on the unit or time with the organization, Renown Postpartum takes you in as family upon hire.
We are a family that immediately gets to know each employee. The leadership team rounds with staff and is constantly checking in to see how life is going on stage and off. They offer an open-door policy to their office, which allows staff a place to vent, cry, laugh, or just get a piece of candy during a tough shift. We have our CNA Carmel who continuously gets recognition from patients stating they felt like they were family. Like they were her daughter or granddaughter. Patients are in tears at the lasting impact she's made on their lives. She exemplifies caring! It has been said by our patients “It’s not easy to have a baby in the NICU, but everyone made us feel so cared for that we couldn’t have made it through without you. And for that, we are deeply grateful.” Also, “Thank you guys so much for taking care of us on the longest, most hectic nights of our lives! You are so kind and caring and we are extremely thankful for you.”
We have Raju who takes on additional projects, making our unit run smoothly and efficiently. She organizes potlucks and parties for celebrations. And if there is a need or a loss she will organize meals and or care.
We have a DAISY Honoree, Dora, who discovered a condition that could have been life-threatening for a baby and went into action quickly to prevent harm. One of our supervisors pulled over and loaded a mother and two small children in her car to give them a ride. She noticed the woman having difficulty managing groceries and her littles and discovered they had too far to go and darkness was approaching. All while on a staff meeting Zoom. Our team has outings and get-togethers organized by the happy hour committee.
When you talk about a team the definition is: “a number of persons associated in some joint action.” Postpartum exemplifies this by associating in the joint action of providing high-quality care to not only our patients and community but to each other. And this is why they are a DAISY Team.
