While this may seem like someone just doing their job, had RN Gardner-Woodhouse not taken ownership of the moment, the Veteran would have likely had a less favorable outcome.
A Veteran went to the ER after using a "ped-egg" too zealously and caused some irritation. The ER said he was ok to follow up as he had a nurse foot clinic appointment. The Veteran went to the nurse's foot clinic. It was noted that he had a callus that was exfoliating with multiple layers which could potentially lead to a foot ulcer. The LPN/RN working with the nurse foot clinic alerted RN Gardner-Woodhouse who stepped in and took ownership of that visit in the absence of a physically available provider.
RN Gardner-Woodhouse contacted the Podiatrist via secure messaging and sent pictures. RN Gardener- Woodhouse debrided the callus to make sure there was no underlying ulcer and recommended a wound care plan that the patient could easily do at home to prevent it from getting worse. RN Gardener-Woodhouse scheduled follow-up appointments for the Veteran and discussed the case with the provider upon their return the following day. The Veteran was seen by the provider. During this visit, the Veteran constantly commended RN Gardener-Woodhouse on the World Class Service he received. The Veteran stated that his foot is completely healed because of her quick action and dedication to the well-being of the Veterans’ health. While this may seem like someone just doing their job, had RN Gardner-Woodhouse not taken ownership of the moment, the Veteran would have likely had a less favorable outcome. The Veteran and the provider want to thank RN Gardener-Woodhouse for allowing her autonomy to function at her highest capacity and for providing excellent care.
