Phylisia, in addition to her own case management tasks, has been a preceptor in the Nurse Residency Program. What an extremely fortunate Resident, indeed! While Phylisia is highly adept at teaching and modeling the needed nursing skills for one new to home care, it is the above and beyond the action that she took related to one case, in particular, that prompts this nomination. The patient was on service for a longer period of time, creating an opportunity for a deeper healing relationship between patient and provider. Both Phylisia and her preceptee demonstrated a significant professional bond with the patient. It was after the patient unfortunately passed away that Phylisia demonstrated her DAISY qualities. She sought my assistance as social work manager to provide support to her preceptee. She understood the impact that the loss of certain patients can have on us as professionals. She ensured that the patient always received what they needed but she also provided the right resource to her colleague and mentee. She understood that the clinical skill, documentation, and case management were only part of her role; she knew that addressing the feeling and reaction to this death, in particular, was necessary.
