Had Rachele not gone above and beyond the general protocols, the patient could have had a negative outcome.
I would like to nominate a dear coworker, Rachele Padula, for the DAISY Award. Rachele goes above and beyond the call of duty every single day. I would like to share one particular moment in the Endoscopy unit that recently occurred that shouldn't go unnoticed. Rachele transported a patient from the floor to the Endoscopy Lab for a procedure, where she proceeded to pre-op (get the patient ready) for the procedure. After talking with the patient and performing the standard protocols for pre-op, Rachele began reading through notes and noticed that the patient had diabetes, but did not have any orders for the floor, nor had the patient's blood glucose levels been checked during the stay. Rachele immediately decided to check the patient's blood glucose, which ended up being critically low.
The patient's blood glucose was treated promptly. Rachele contacted the primary team and made them aware of the situation. Had Rachele not gone above and beyond the general protocols, the patient could have had a negative outcome.
Rachele's decision to investigate and her drive for patient safety ultimately saved the patient from entering a critical situation. It is truly an honor to work alongside a nurse with such determination to give her patient's the best and most responsible care.
