Rebecca was able to provide this family with the gift of goodbye and conducted herself as a nurse with many years of experience.
The granddaughter of patients that were cared for in our hospital wanted to share her experience and nominate Rebecca Vernon for her exceptional care. Her experience was discussed at length, and additional information was given by a fellow team member on the unit. The nomination below is what was gleaned from those conversations:
The nominator’s grandparents were both admitted through the ED to the 1st and 2nd floors. Sadly, the grandfather was not doing well, and with them both admitted, a special visit was arranged down in his room. With Rebecca's help via facetime, the granddaughter was able to watch her grandmother give her grandfather one last kiss.
Dr. D was excellent and walked the family through the entire process as well as granted the approval for the visit from his wife. Rebecca provided the grandfather’s care until he passed away. She thought it was important for his family to see him looking himself for the last time, so before she set up one last facetime call, she removed his high flow and got him set up on a nasal cannula. Through this facetime call, they were able to share a final few words with him.
The granddaughter and nominator is a nurse. She has lost both grandfathers in the last 2 months and expressed how much these moments meant to her and her family. The granddaughter wanted to make sure that the team knows what an important impact they make in the lives of their patients and families. She knows how hard this last year has been on everyone and will be forever grateful for the way her grandparents were treated.
Rebecca was able to provide this family with the gift of goodbye and conducted herself as a nurse with many years of experience in this type of situation, although this was the first time that she had been with a patient for their passing. She reached out to the family after they spoke with the doctor to express to them what the patient’s last few moments were and to offer them comfort in knowing their words enabled him to find peace.
Note: This is Rebecca's 2nd DAISY Award!
