As Patrick Barnes and his family were awestruck by the care and compassion his nurses provided him, we as an organization need to be aware and awestruck by a Super Hero team amongst us. As we often hear, it takes a village; and most recently, "We are all in this together". Two fellow associates stand out as Extraordinary Nurses and definitely were in this together as they recently cared for a particular ICU patient. They are known for consistently providing superb and compassionate care to each patient they encounter. Their devotion and dedication is evident and a true work of art.
Without this team of 2 exemplary nurses, our patient, who is definitely a success story, now awaits a transfer to rehab. He would not be here today if it were not for the excellent care he received from our 2 superb ICU nurses.
Juvy Corales RN is a hidden hero among us. On a recent weekend, I had the opportunity to round and see Juvy in action. She was diligently caring for a COVID positive patient, who was receiving CRRT (continuous renal replacement therapy). CRRT is a newer procedure at RMC. This patient was a young father who was engaged to be married soon. He was intubated, receiving CRRT treatment, and visualization of his ICU room revealed no less than 15 IV infusions running and multiple pieces of medical equipment present. All of this care provided in an effort to save his life. Juvy's care delivery can leave one speechless as she gracefully delivers care to those in need. I witnessed firsthand our nurse gowned in full PPE assessing her patient with all of his monitors and equipment. She intensely monitored the most IVs and machines I have never seen. Her peers in the area mentioned to me that she was so devoted to her patient that she did not want to leave him for her lunch break. True dedication and a love for what a nurse does- this is definitely a description of our ICU Nurse Juvy.
Outside of this room was our second Super-Hero Nurse Rita. Rita was documenting lists of what epic upgrades were needed for our care of the CRRT patient. She was collaborating with her colleague, Juvy, along with Dr. K to ensure the best possible care for their patients. Rita was instrumental in covering for Juvy in the room when Juvy needed to step out. We ran short of drainage bags for this procedure- neither of them panicked, both jumped into action together to develop a workaround process to drain the current bags until more came in. Rita explained that it is not the most optimal solution, but it would work and that she and Juvy were on top of it. Maturity and integrity, the ability to succeed in intense times were evident as they spoke. Their teamwork is admirable, their divine respect for each other's knowledge evident. In addition, Dr. K remarked how miraculous this team of nurses were, and how he is learning from them. Skills of an astute nurse, not wasting a minute and ensuring that the needs of this patient and all future patients are met. What a selfless act of ownership for both of these nurses for RMC! It is always a testament to excellence when our physicians recognize our nurses. In addition to partnering with us in our plan of care for all CRRT patients moving forward, I am very grateful Dr. K let us know what a great job this team is doing.
Our patients receive excellent and extraordinary care because of Juvy and Rita. So proud of them and wanted all to know of these 2 Super Heroes amongst us.
