As a patient in the PACU Robin was the nurse assigned to me. Since my surgery was unexpected, my daughter had to drive over from Tampa. Since her husband was in Breckenridge skiing, the grandchildren came with her. On her way here she stopped at our home and picked up her father, my husband. Having had two strokes, the last leaving him with receptive and expressive aphasia, my husband needs some assistance. Because my surgery was unexpected, I did not get to see my family prior to going into the operating room. When my family arrived, Robyn brought my husband in to see me. She took him back to the waiting room and offered to remain with him and the three grandchildren that my daughter had with her, aged 7, 5 and 18 months without being asked to do so. She offered my family nourishment. My daughter was so impressed that Robyn realized that my husband could not be left alone with the grandchildren and that she did this on her own without being asked to do it. I, too, am impressed with the caring, patient and family oriented care that she gave. I feel that this was above and beyond the call of duty and shows compassionate care. This really meant so much to all of us because we did not see each other prior to the procedure.
With that encounter, Robyn demonstrated all the criteria for the Daisy award. She treated all of us with respect, especially my husband. She certainly showed integrity and earned the respect and trust of myself and my daughter who was so impressed with her compassion and understanding of the situation. Robyn demonstrated excellence because she exceed what was expected. She showed stewardship because she went out of her way to accommodate my husband, daughter and grandchildren. She certainly showed teamwork because if she had not gone that extra mile for me, my daughter would have had to wait much longer to see me and would have been much more worried. The compassionate family/patient care that she gave me certainly helped me recover quickly.
