When you talk to the team about Joy, they will describe her to you in a way that reflects the values of King Faisal Hospital:
A summary of who and what Joy is as a nurse and an individual can be described in the following words: patient-focused, kind, modest, hardworking, a person for everyone. She is a team player, approachable, humble, conscientious, caring, flexible, unassuming, and compassionate in her approach.
Joy is consistent in her professional attitude and empathetic in her manner.
Over her years of working at King Faisal Hospital, Joy has built a reputation among our multidisciplinary team colleagues as a person with integrity and dependability, who is consistent in the delivery of high-quality care for patients and relatives. She can handle any difficult situation with ease, with a smile and a positive attitude. She inspires others to embody her gentle ways and this is strongly evident in her kindness and support to new staff while guiding them to develop personally and professionally.
In return, Joy is well-liked by patients, relatives, and staff; who consistently show great respect for her.
Joy energizes the team with her motivation and being proactive. Joy seizes the opportunities to teach and educate staff in developing their roles i.e.: charge nurse, nursery cross-training. When the staff is anxious or nervous, Joy nurtures and helps bring out the best out of them. An example of this was where a new mother was anxious about breastfeeding, she was tearful and felt useless. Joy assisted the nursery nurse in supporting the patient. Joy reassured both mother and nursery nurse and totally turned the situation around. This is a typical example of how she demonstrates her compassion on a daily basis. She makes herself available to the team at all times, especially on busy shifts. For example, she would go from being a charge nurse to an NCA to a breastfeeding advocate, adapting to the demands of everybody to ensure patients' and nurses' needs are all attended to in a timely manner.
Joy is also proactive with both patient and unit safety. She is an active member of the Unit Based Council as the Chair Person; ensuring CBAHI and Magnet accreditations were prepared for. She actively participates to maintain unit-based practice and through the UBC -CAUTI task force she has co-presented this work at international conferences. Joy takes her leadership role with ease and helped to support the head nurse on D4 to orientate and fit comfortably into her new role. When in charge of the Unit, the team knows they will have a good shift as Joy is organized and will ensure that patient care needs are met. An example occurred where both a mother and son were being admitted at the same time and the extended family was anxious and required support. Joy collaborated with the protocol team to manage a smooth transition for all involved.
Joy works well with other hospital departments and in particular the protocol patient group. Here she receives regular positive feedback both verbal and in 'Thank You' cards. Joy was also nominated for Employee of the Month in 2019.
It is my honor to recognize my colleague, Joy. She is a true DAISY Nurse.
