The patient stated he was homeless and was afraid to lose his clothes, so he wore them all. The next day Rosario bought new sweatpants and shirts and gifted them to the patient. The patient cried and was grateful.
Rosario Cazares is the embodiment of Parkland's CIRCLES in everything she does.
She exhibits Compassion for each of her patients. A patient was admitted and he had on multiple pairs of pants. He refused to change and stated that he was comfortable with his clothes. During her assessment, she offered him a hospital gown and pants. The patient agreed and stated he was homeless and was afraid to lose his clothes, so he wore them all. The next day this nurse bought new sweatpants and shirts and gifted them to the patient. The patient cried and was grateful on his last day in the hospital. There are many more examples to add to this.
Integrity: She is honest and fair in all her dealings. She accepts any assignment given to her and will go out of her way to help her coworkers. She always offers to assist coworkers that need help dealing with Spanish-speaking patients, especially at discharge.
Respect: She is respectful to all her leaders and fellow nurses and to every patient she cares for. We had a patient that was very agitated and confused. She was not only able to calm him down, but she also assisted the PCA to shave the patient and trim his very long hair and beard. The patient co-operated and was a changed person after that. He felt valued and respected.
She Collaborates well with peers. The floor staff had planned to make a poster for the Physicians Day celebration and to bring cake for all the doctors on the floor. Unfortunately due to the surge of COVID-19, the staff was unable to act. This nurse, kept her word, made the poster and got the cake for the doctors, and made it memorable in spite of the outbreak.
She displays Leadership through her commitment to volunteering in committees and is a member of the UBC. She is constantly checking on her colleagues to make sure they are not drowning in their assignments. On one occasion she found that her colleague's mother passed away and she brought him lunch and sat with him to console and comfort him.
This nurse demonstrates Excellence in her everyday actions. She had already given report on her sick patient and was getting ready to head home when she stopped to ask the night nurse if she needed anything. She was told that this patient was declining, so she stayed to help with the RAT call, because the night nurse was just coming on shift, and this nurse knew the patient well as she took care of him all day. She stayed long after the shift was over, spoke with the patient, and held his hand, to comfort him, leaving only when the patient was stable.
Stewardship: She displays this commitment both in her personal life and at work. She is a stem cell donor to unknown children in need after her cousin died of bone cancer. She looked tired one day at work and when asked she said that she did bone marrow donation and it hurts for a few days. Another example, a patient whose surgery was delayed multiple times was finally informed that she would go to surgery the next day, the patient became anxious and tearful throughout the day. This nurse offered her time, sat with the patient, and prayed, and then she paged the chaplain, who came and spoke with the patient. This allowed the patient to cry, vent, and she felt more peaceful.
