I would like to nominate our 4E nurse Sam. As soon as Sam joined our team, I knew he was going to be a very meaningful and positive asset to the unit. His compassion goes beyond measure and his friendly demeanor can make anyone feel comfort in his presence. I recently worked with Sam with a patient going through a particularly rough time. This patient’s treatments had not been successful, and he was very disappointed that he would have to spend the holiday in the hospital and away from his young children. Sam was equally as disappointed and upset with the situation. He felt such deep compassion and empathy for this patient. He spent a lot of time providing not only medical care to the patient but emotional care and support as well. He took the time to stop in to offer support by means of conversation and motivation rather than just stopping to give his meds. You could see the patient start to feel a sense of safety with Sam. He has a way of making everyone around him feel safe, accepted, and cared for. We are all so lucky to have Sam on our unit. He definitely deserves to be recognized for his amazing work and ability to form the connections that are so important in this field of work.
