Sandra was nominated for her care of a patient diagnosed with bile duct cancer and her attentiveness shown to his family. Throughout the man's stay, Sandra was sure to explain every step to the family and make them feel comfortable about the process. She listened to all the family's concerns and even made personal connections by asking for stories about her patient and describing her own family life.
"Sandra helped us laugh when we needed a laugh," the patient's family member wrote. "She shared her human side with us, and we all hugged when she left at the end of her shift."
After her shift, Sandra made sure the new nurse was well prepared to continue the patient's care, so the man was treated with respect.
"Sandra treated him as if he were her dad. I don't know how nurses do what they do, but those that do it well are heroes in my eyes."
