Sarah Ingersoll, BSN, RN-BC from 3 Lacks received the DAISY award last week. She was nominated by a patient who wrote, "Sarah entered my life at a time when I didn't think anything could be worse. I had just been given the news that I won't get any better."
The patient was a strong, independent woman who was furious about her terminal prognosis. There were countless meetings and care conferences trying to find just the right team who could help her, but whenever someone tried to approach her about her care plan or disease process it was like throwing gasoline on the fire. Sarah used the art of nursing to truly listen and help her patient realize that her anger stemmed from her loss of control. She was able to confidently and ever-so gently break through her patient's barriers. The short nomination from the patient's weak handwriting ends with this powerful sentence, "I feel that I have her in my corner so it's okay."
