At the beginning of her shift (hadn't even received all her reports), Sarah responded to a patient situation. The patient was not assigned to Sarah and had become extremely agitated requiring a call to security. Sarah (before security arrived) went into the room, introduced herself and set expectations that she was there to help and aid the patient in solving and deescalating the situation. Sarah was able to calm this patient down and develop a relationship with her. Sarah calmed this patient down enough to identify the patient's trigger and solve it. Security did not have to enter the room and the patient was spared that trigger. She did an amazing job at sitting and communicating with this patient.
Guess I should have waited until the end of our shift because the saga continued. The same patient continued to have a hard day mentally and finally released her frustration on her window, breaking the window and creating a very dangerous environment. Sarah was the first to respond to the room and quickly calmed the patient from further harm to herself and harming staff. Sarah has a gift of compassion and care which stands tough even in frustrating (dangerous) situations. She stayed with this patient (again she was not assigned to her) for the remainder of the shift and talked her down and got her safely to a new room. Sarah saved the day!
