1. Sengthai Suon has been described by many of his peers and patients as “the best nurse they have had the pleasure of knowing!” He has the ability to blend both his critical care knowledge with his compassion-based behaviors to create a patient experience that most people will never forget. Sengthai can be often found using his congenial disposition to make patients laugh and uses faith to help guide his practice.
2. He believes in the power of prayer. Sengthai prays with every patient prior to inserting IV’s. He prays with patients that are depressed, hopeless, baker acted, confused or just requesting prayer. Recently, he prayed with a very confused patient who was a young man that had high ammonia levels. He had been in mittens, lap belt and had an admin sitter. The patient had been hospitalized for one month and was confused the whole time. Sengthai took the time to pray and continue to re-orient the patient. The next day the patient wasn’t confused. Of course, God’s power is the credit for the healing, but the belief that Sengthai demonstrated was immense.
3. A great example of the dedication to nursing excellence and the quality of care this nurse provides is evident in the communication I received from a patient’s wife and case management which can be seen below. During nurse leader rounds this terminal patient had tears in his eyes stating “This is the BEST nurse I have ever had…I was even given a back massage and I didn’t even have to ask!”
4. A number of Case Managers (CM) complimented SW1 RN, Sengthai, for his thorough knowledge of his patients, kind approach to the entire healthcare team and courage/interest in helping CM with appropriate discharge planning.
5. I just received another call (2:00P), this time from Mrs. X regarding care of Mr. X, currently in Sengthai’s care. She wants to verbally compliment him for the care given to her husband, in a nutshell…”the best RN she has ever come across, and hopes that one day this nominee will be the president of this hospital”.
