At approximately 9:14 am, Engine 8 and Rescue 8 were dispatched to a report of a vehicle in the water. Units found the vehicle as reported, with the front end in the Niagara Waterway and the back half out. The vehicle was occupied by the unconscious driver and intrepid off duty Fawcett Memorial nurse, Shanel Dawkins.
CCSO was already in the waist-high water when CCFEMS personnel entered to assess the patient. The patient stopped breathing and had no pulse. Ms. Dawkins immediately began compressions on the coded subject. CCSO, CCFEMS, and Ms. Dawkins assisted in the prompt removal of the victim.
Ms. Dawkins continued compressions until relieved by transport personnel. I firmly believe her timely and continued efforts were a major contributing factor in patient survivability. Fawcett Memorial Hospital should be proud to have such a dedicated, skilled and passionate nurse on staff. We and our patient owe her a debt of gratitude.
