On Mother's Day, my mom received a phone call from my grandfather's extended care facility. They were sending him to the hospital for wheezing. When my mom arrived, she learned that the situation was far more serious than just wheezing. He was admitted to the SIMCU and honoring his wishes, he was transitioned to comfort measures only, followed by hospice care. That first night, his nurse was Shelby Edwards, and she remained his primary nurse for three consecutive nights. To say that she went above and beyond is an injustice that does not even begin to illustrate just how excellent the care that she provided to my grandfather was. Not only did she provide excellent nursing care, but the support, empathy, and compassion she showed to our entire family was like no other experience we have ever had. She advocated for him and our family. She was a true blessing during an incredibly difficult time. She made every effort to make sure that we had what we needed, offering chairs for us as we remained bedside with him, tissues because many tears were shed, and empathizing with us as we talked about him, shared stories, and dealt with our anticipatory grief. Shelby is the epitome of excellence in nursing and a true inspiration to me, as I am currently a nursing student. She is a true DAISY Nurse.
