My boyfriend was hospitalized for lumbar fusion. He had excruciating pain post-op that was very difficult to control no matter what we seemed to do. Shiella was our nursing angel. We were blessed enough to have her 3 of the 4 nights and she was amazing. Being a nurse myself, I know how challenging a patient with pain control issues can be. However, she made it seem easy.
To list a few of her invaluable qualities, she was always patient, compassionate, timely, calm, proactive, knowledgeable, and most importantly she always listened and addressed not only his needs, but mine as well in a timely and non-judgmental way. We always felt heard and a part of his plan of care. To give an example, the patient is terrified of needles and Shiella was patient and understanding. She explained everything she was doing and took the time to calm him. She used the smallest needle possible and got it first try! Her expertise was apparent as she knew the importance of giving pain pills around the clock on a schedule to avoid uncontrolled pain. This was especially important as she works night shift. She was very good about keeping the care board up to date for his pain med times. Our hospital stay would not have been the same without her.
