My daughter, A, had been diagnosed with pre-eclampsia. At the time we did not know how critical things were. My daughter began with stomach pains which were thought to be GI related at the time. As time progressed, the pain became unbearable for my daughter, and she began to beg me to help her. I, as her mom, had done all I could do to help her and I knew it was not GI related. We were desperate for help, and A needed the pain to stop. She could no longer do it. That's when I hit the call button and yelled out, "We need a doctor in here now!" Simone McCoy heard our cry and quickly knew that A's thrashing about in agony was not normal. She stepped in and took compassion on A and held her in her arms and spoke with confidence and empathy. She wasted no time in calling out and ensuring she was moved upstairs to labor and delivery so we could begin testing to find out what was wrong. The truth is that I don't know what would have happened if Simone had not heard my cry. She was tuned into the sheer horror in my voice, and she didn't hesitate. As A was treated for pain and blood was drawn we learned later that she had HELLP syndrome. It was severe and critical and imperative that she deliver the baby, even at 25 weeks. We were horrified.
Our baby (my 1st grandson) was delivered and went straight to NICU. A began magnesium and was kept comfortable. The next morning Simone came and checked on A. She wasn't her nurse or even on her floor, but she truly cared about what had happened. As it turned out, our baby wasn't able to maintain lung function, and he went to heaven.
We have been devastated, but we have not been alone. Simone was a vital part in my daughter getting help and diagnosis. I feel like she saved my daughter's life. I shudder to think that I could be leaving here today without my daughter nor my grandson. She is everything a nurse should be. She is articulate, confident and yet compassionate. She listens and hears what patient's need. And it saved A's life!
