While caring for a young 35-year-old post-AMI patient, I observed Soniya interact with the patient and family in such a compassionate manner. As a true patient advocate, she gave very specific patient education for discharge after AMI. She provides quality care as evidenced by patient outcomes. I have observed her nurture the growth of so many new graduate nurses. She has lots of patience to teach in a meaningful way. She works well with all members of the healthcare team by leading the daily ICU huddle, rounding with case managers, and collaborating with the chaplain for end of life issues while keeping the patient and family members involved in the care of the patient.Soniya demonstrates a commitment to excellence by following core measures and other measures from the different registries. After her patient has a PCI, she ensures that all recommended medications are ordered, Cardiac Rehab Phase 2 (outpatient rehab) is ordered and the LVEF is assessed (NCDR registry). She helps create a healthy work environment in the ICU. I have observed her function as a charge nurse and at the same time act as a preceptor for two new employees. She can juggle her time very effectively thru collaboration with her co-workers. She is an authentic leader who supports appropriate staffing. She is a skilled communicator, building up morale and confidence of the new nurses she is orienting. During one of the ICU huddles, her new grad orientee was being praised by the ICU medical director, which is direct result of how good of a mentor Soniya is. She is very quick to recognize her peers and help build a solid ICU team. Soniya truly generates enthusiasm and energy towards meeting all the challenges in nursing.
