No matter which way you try to define it, at the Specialty Clinic, 'team' has always meant, 'Together Everyone Accomplishes More'. This project actually 'selected' us.
Julie Cummings was leaving work; she recalls it being a cold and crisp November evening. When approaching the doors to the parking garage she met a man with a little boy who had Downs' Syndrome. The man pointed to an envelope on the table and said "you probably know more about how to deal with that than I do." He quickly left.
Julie wasn't sure what he meant, but it caught her curiosity. The envelope was "Random Acts of Kindness" sponsored by a local radio station. The envelope contained a $50.00 bill with 3 choices. The choices were to keep the money, give the money away or add to it and give it away. Julie knew without hesitation what she was going to do.
Julie enlisted help from her co-workers from the Specialty Clinic team to join the crusade. They elected to help a patient who was newly diagnosed with cancer. He and his wife didn't have much, so Christmas looked grim for them, as her health was poor also. They had no high expectations of Christmas being anything different than any other day.
The Specialty Clinic team turned $50 into $200. It was so exciting to watch everyone take part in whatever way they could. They obtained gift cards for groceries and gas, new pillows and soft blankets which were all wrapped up in Christmas bags and presented to the patient and his wife with a very special Merry Christmas. The team enjoyed the journey.
After Christmas and when his chemotherapy treatments were done, this patient stopped by to thank the team again, filled with hugs, tears and laughter, sharing again what a wonderful Christmas they had. They will be forever a part of the Specialty Clinic family!
