Stephanie offered to precept me because my main preceptor had a last-minute appointment. Little did we know what our day would bring. We were assigned a 3-year-old NAT (non-accidental trauma) with a history of sexual and physical abuse. A brain death exam was done the day prior with a second one scheduled during our shift. Despite having a daughter about the same age as the patient, Stephanie from the get-go demonstrated compassion, integrity, excellence, teamwork, and wholeness. We were both aware early on that our patient was not going to make it but Stephanie still ensured that this child received the ultimate care anybody could receive. She taught me how to respect and empathize, whether it was ensuring every line remained off of her skin in order to maintain skin integrity on her already edematous body or speaking to our patient like she would her own child. Stephanie ensured this child was safe in every aspect even if it meant protecting her from those lurking around the hospital that were presumed to have caused this and every stranger that tried to get information on our patient. Stephanie showed integrity by ensuring best practices were implemented every step of the way and providing excellent care that made me want to do everything possible for this child. The entire day Stephanie ensured this child's last day on earth was spent feeling loved and cared for. She effortlessly worked alongside social workers, sheriffs, coroners, and child protective service agencies.
All the while she ensured that I was ok and making sure I was learning every step of the way. At the end of the shift, this child was surrounded by Stephanie, the doctor, an RT and myself. This patient had no one else but us. Every person in this room ensured this patient received the respect and care she deserved prior to withdrawing care. Once care was withdrawn, Stephanie and I were left alone with her patient as we prepared her for the coroner. Stephanie was an amazing support system allowing both of us to go through the stages of grief together. She made sure I did not feel alone just as she did throughout the day with our patient. Stephanie made an impact on me that day that will stick with me forever. Anything and everything that is done for our patients is done out of respect and integrity. To nurture and protect the health and well-being of our patients even if it feels as if we have exhausted all of our cares. I am thankful for the values that Stephanie has taught me through the residency and I hope to reflect myself just as she has.
