There are many heroes in this mission moment, but Susan was mentioned by every single one of them as standing out above all.
One early morning the care given by Susan Adkins RN was not only extraordinary but was lifesaving. This allowed for the quick, time-sensitive intervention that was needed. If the patient had not received them, she would not have gone home with her baby from the hospital. Susan is a charge nurse in Labor and Delivery who was working in postpartum that night as part of a cross-training adder program. Her years of experience were a true blessing in this circumstance. This patient had gone up to the ICU after her C-section due to a postpartum hemorrhage for close observation. Susan went up to do the patient's fundal exam, noticed a distinct difference and called for the doctor to evaluate. ICU staff present stated that despite the language barrier with the patient (she spoke Haitian Creole), problems with MARTI, and the language line, Susan remained calm. Susan was a Patient Advocate and made quick and concise decisions to get the people needed to the patient’s bedside and then to the OR. This patient ended up with a 7,000 cc blood loss. An amazing team of LDRP, ICU, OR, and Anesthesia staff worked together and saved her life. The patient went home from the hospital with her baby doing well. She was so incredibly thankful and said she knew if she had been in Haiti she would have lost her life. There are many heroes in this mission moment, but Susan was mentioned by every single one of them as standing out above all. She is a leader in my department and shows compassion to every patient and coworker. No one is more deserving of a DAISY Award than Susan Adkins.
