Suzanne demonstrates leadership by involving others in improving care. She is one of the team leaders responsible for the initial implementation of the primary care model on the Evening shift 4CD. Through her commitment to improving the therapeutic relationship with the veteran and her focus to deliver patient centered care, she has committed herself to continually improving the primary model of care on inpatient acute psychiatry. She has taken the lead in developing and implementing education groups on her tour, focusing on stress management and coping skills that have continually been requested and have received positive affirmations on the truth point survey.
Suzanne is passionate about nursing and, more importantly, passionate for providing world class care to her veterans that is patient recovery centered. She has demonstrated this care through countless veteran interactions, but one in particular helped a veteran complete his treatment and return home.
S was rapidly readmitted to our unit, decompensated and non-compliant with any treatment. He was very angry, unreceptive to any care, and demanded to be discharged, stating "nothing is wrong with me". Suzanne built a therapeutic relationship with S, providing support, trust, and education to help him recover in his illness. Through 1:1 education and group therapy S was able to have a better understanding of his illness and need for medication compliance. S's plan was not to return home to his family, but with the support of the treatment team and Suzanne's support and compassion, the patient returned home to his daughter.
During family visits Suzanne met with both patient and family in opening up a dialogue that was just not treatment focused, but family centered. This support provided the family with the ability to work on an appropriate aftercare plan that they felt was realistic and manageable. Her interventions had a significant impact on this patient's transition and return to his home setting. The therapy enabled him to have ongoing family support which ultimately has impacted his recovery and ability to remain as an outpatient at home!
