Tara was presented her DAISY Award by her Clinical Director, Laurie Hartwig, BSN, RN, who was the Trinity Mother Frances DAISY honoree the previous month.
The first nomination:
“When we finally left the Express Admissions Unit at 11 pm on a Friday night, I was worried we were leaving our great staff behind. My mom had been bragging how beautiful the room would be and there would be a couch for me to rest. So needless to say, when we arrived on 3 East and there were construction items and no one seemed to be around, I was WORRIED. We arrived at the horrible room and my mother asked if this was a storage closet. Not only was it old, but it was also in desperate need of updating. There was no couch on which I could sleep, but an old fold away bed. It was horrible!
However, the moment Tara came in we both felt at peace. She had the kindest aura and she went above and beyond to help us and she started trying to move my mom to the floor where she should have been, I was in no way leaving her in this place. I had been caring for her 24 hours a day for 10 days and I was exhausted! Tara said she would check on my mom hourly and she requested a sleeping pill, which she paged the doctor four times to do this. So finally, at 1 am I was able to go home and sleep, knowing my mom was in the best hands! She even let me call when I arrived home because my mom was so worried about me. This was Tara's idea and she even said she would wake her up and tell her and she did.
The nurse was a blessing to us both and I was able to sleep at home and know my mom was in great hands. I rested well and was able to come back refreshed and able to help with my mother. Thank you Tara! She turned a negative into a positive.” - daughter of the patient Tara cared for.
The second nomination:
“Following a massive stroke, I was readmitted almost immediately to room 349 with a fever and infection in my bloodstream. I was scared and felt lousy. Tara oversaw my care with knowledge, skill and great compassion. Even as a charge nurse she was never too busy to talk with me or just listen. Her caring attitude made me proud to say "I am a nurse". She was a great role model and mentor for the younger nurses too.” – Linda Klotz, Dean and Professor of Nursing at the University of Texas at Tyler.
