On 2 West, we had a patient who was admitted from the airport. He was flying from Indianapolis to his home in Mexico. He became more ill on the plane; therefore, he was brought to our facility. The patient had been given a diagnosis of terminal illness while in Indianapolis, his prognosis was poor, and he was deteriorating quickly. One first day he was with us, Marianna Marshall coordinated with our navigator, Matthew, a “little, pick me up” for him. The patient was down, because he did not make it home to Mexico. Matthew brought him a stuffed animal and Marianna bought him some balloons from the gift shop. The patient spent 10 days in our facility. The nursing staff, navigator, and case managers coordinated calls with the family in an effort to get the family there to be with the patient and travel with him back to Mexico. His wish was to see the rest of his family before he passed away. After a lot of coordination, including a last-minute glitch with transportation to the airport. The ambulance van arrived to transport the patient to the airport, but the patient was too weak to get in the wheelchair. Ray Javier, the charge nurse, quickly called AMR to arrange for stretcher transportation for the patient to the airport. Luckily, they arrived in time to transport the patient to the airport in time for his flight. The patient arrived in Mexico in time to spend his final hours with his family. The family wrote a letter stating how much our efforts meant to them and the patient.
