Tremilla discovered her patient was indeed homeless and had no possessions, including no warm clothing. She took the jacket she was wearing and handed it to her patient.
Jacksonville, Florida experienced the coldest day since January 2019. The temperature in the air was breathtaking. Our team on Behavioral Health Adult Pavillion reported to their shift at 0645 with long sleeves and coats accompanying their navy blue scrubs. The day started quickly and soon our team had identified the discharges to be processed.
As inventories and final assessments were completed, meds collected, education returned successfully, it became clear to Tremilla that her discharging patient was becoming anxious. Upon investigation, Tremilla discovered her patient was indeed homeless and had no possessions, including no warm clothing. She took the jacket she was wearing and handed it to her patient. Visibly moved by the gesture, the patient thanked Tremilla, but inquired how she could do such a selfless act.
Tremilla's response was the epitome of excellent mental health skilled nursing and compassionate care. She simply stated, "I have a short walk from this building to my car in the parking garage, you need this to keep you warm and well."
Tremilla's act of donating the coat off her back to one of our patients was proof of her excellence as an outstanding role model in our Memorial/HCA community.
