What impressed me the most, though, was how Trista gave this man and his family the words to say to the oncologist in order to get the care he truly needed.
Empathic, caring, and kind are all words that describe many, if not most, nurses. Trista demonstrates these character traits every day she comes in to work as well as a keen attention to detail when caring for her patients. A patient came in for a biopsy with multiple cancerous lesions on his head and skin. He was in a lot of pain. Trista read carefully through the history and physical note provided by the oncologist just 2-3 weeks before this patient’s visit to our facility. In assessing the patient, she realized he had majorly declined since last seeing the oncologist. This particular patient did not carry any health insurance and was of a lower economic class. Additionally, it was clear he and his family did not understand the healthcare system and how to advocate for one’s health. Trista stepped in as a patient advocate in realizing this man needed attention for the progression of his disease and, when we normally do not schedule follow-ups for patients after a biopsy, she was on the phone with the cancer clinic and got him an appointment for just 2 days later. Not only that, she worked with the procedure physician to manage this patient’s pain post-operatively. By the time the patient left our facility, he was saying “I feel like a new man.” His pain was at a manageable level. What impressed me the most, though, was how Trista gave this man and his family the words to say to the oncologist in order to get the care he truly needed. At one point, the patient’s wife and teenage daughter were outside of the patient’s room talking about how Trista was the first person in the healthcare system to demonstrate true empathy and compassion towards their family member. While heartbreaking, I know that this is who she is 100% of the time. I felt so proud to work with her. Trista leads in kindness by example and I know our unit staff is better because we see her caring for her patients with excellence every time she comes to work. I am so thankful I get to work alongside her.
