Vernita is the kind of person who would literally give you the shirt off her back and practically has! There are many occasions I can think where Vernita has personified what I know the DAISY award to be, but one sticks out and every time I see the email looking for nominees, I think of this situation.
There was a new admit who came up in the afternoon a couple of months ago during our unit's "crazy time". The young man only had the clothes on his back with him. Vernita was his admitting nurse and at one point after the patient had been on the floor for a while I noticed her carrying an armful of personal stuff in a plastic bag. I asked her what had happened to her backpack (a fairly new Jansport bag). She told me she had given it to her hew admit. She said he was a really nice guy who lived alone and didn't have much: his own "book back" was torn and so she gave him hers.
Things like this are second nature to Vernita. I have seen her give away more than most people have. She says she is blessed in her life and her actions show she doesn't mind sharing the blessings. She never self-promotes and never seeks approval for her acts of kindness. She may not be your DAISY but she is mine!
