Willeen had a patient in the COU who came from a nursing home. She noticed the patient had dirty socks with holes and no underwear or undershirts. After talking with the patient, she learned that he really didn't have any family and the facility he lived in really couldn't or didn't help with those types of things.
After he was discharged, she decided it would be nice to put together a Christmas present of socks, underwear, undershirts, and bedroom shoes. She planned to stop by to visit the man during the holidays since he had confided that he was basically alone without any close family. When she went to visit, the facility had been shut down. There was some contact information posted on a vehicle in the parking lot so she called and found where he had been moved. It was an additional hour away, but she decided to make the drive and was so glad she did. She said it was very nice to sit and visit with the man and he was very appreciative.
Willeen truly has a giving spirit and embodies what I feel is essential to nursing.
