The sudden occurrence of COVID brought with it many challenges and changes to Nursing at GMH. For nearly 1 year (and some months) 3 West (along with of course ICU) was the COVID unit. The Nurses on 3 West provided compassionate Patient care to the GMH COVID Positive and PUI Patients. Within hours of admission to 3W, Patients were often transferred off 3W, once their COVID test results were negative. This meant the Nurses were doing several admissions in one shift, and more than usual….day after day, after day. Providing Care to the COVID patients, allowed the staff to enhance their knowledge of COVID medications and the respiratory needs of these Patients. The Nurses became a resource for one another and a cohesive team…almost isolated from the rest of the hospital. They helped each other in every way possible. The Nurses sometimes became weary with the care these Patients required. But selflessly they showed up on time and daily to help their 3W Team Weary in the turn-over admissions. Weary when staff pulled from other units would not show up or refuse to work with COVID Patients. Finally weary of witnessing the death of many patients they had made a connection with and fearlessly provided care for. I would like to have these nurses know that they have done a good job and someone has noticed. In my opinion, all our GMH nurses are phenomenal, but I wholeheartedly feel 3W could use some recognition for the last year or so they have undergone. There is so much more I could say, but I will end here.
