Abbey recognized this grief in her patient and put it upon herself to do everything she could to help him through this troubling time.
During a nine-day stay at Lutheran Hospital recovering from the physical pain of acute pancreatitis, a patient regretfully learned that his mother had passed away. With six days of recovery remaining, his physical pain was enhanced by the emotional strife of losing his mother. Abbey recognized this grief in her patient and put it upon herself to do everything she could to help him through this troubling time. She took time on her days off to check in on the patient and care for his well-being. She regularly assured him that she cared and made sure to greet him with kind smiles and friendly waves anytime she saw him. Two days after his mother’s passing, the patient was presented with a touching condolence card individually signed by the entire MS4C staff. The patient later discovered that Abbey herself was behind this gesture and was moved to tears over the unwavering support shown to him. Along with being a prompt, efficient, and knowledgeable nurse, Abbey went above and beyond what was expected and helped her patient heal both physically and emotionally, leaving a lasting impression and helping him cope with his loss.
