During my family’s excruciating experience, Abi's acts of support and expressions of sympathy, even as our loved one took his final breaths, left an indelible impression.
We had a dying young COVID patient in ICU that was being cared for by Abi. The father of the patient was singing a lullaby song to the patient while fighting back tears. Abi recognized the song and that the family member (father) was struggling and came to the bedside and sang with them. She carried this family through their grief, knowing the patient would not survive this day. She stayed with the patient during his last minutes while updating the patient’s father and was so compassionate. Fast forward to doctor’s day, she and I ran into Dr. X, the patient's father. Dr. X was so emotional when he saw Abi and said she was the angel of the ICU and was so complimentary of her compassion, professionalism, and attention to the family.
He stated, “I was there for my son’s first breath and you were with him during his last breath,” as he was unable to make it in time before his son died. It was a touching moment seeing the emotion from Dr. X because of his gratefulness to Abi. Having been a health professional for a span of forty years, I have crossed paths with literally dozens of nurses. The recent, untimely loss of my eldest son while being ably cared for by Abi reminded me that there would always be nurses that truly exemplify the best representation of their calling. During my family’s excruciating experience, Abi's acts of support and expressions of sympathy, even as our loved one took his final breaths, left an indelible impression. I am proud to work in an institution that highlights nurses such as Abi.
