When thinking of the word "leadership" the first thing that comes to mind is to lead by example. When you want to watch a group or team achieve something or be productive you need positivity, a good work ethic, and to truly care about the work you do. If there was one person who embodies leadership in our hospital it would be Adam Blackerby.
He has stepped into a role that he didn't have to but did because he saw what wonderful things could be done for the patients in this community if our nurses had the right guidance. He has worked more hours weekly than any full-time nurse on our unit and not once has he complained about it to his team. He pushed his team to be the best, not just for themselves but for the patients, because when the patients win, we all win. He enforces that change happens in 3 ways: from the top as in a dictatorship, from the bottom as in a revolt, or laterally where each person must do their part to be the change they want to see in their environment. He has practiced and preached this and has had results that some people didn't think were even achievable.
Adam takes time out of his day to stop his duties and speak with patients one on one when he notes that they aren't happy, or that they need to feel more cared for or simply just heard and understood. He stays past the typical manager time frame of 8-5 to be sure that he is able to interact and support all of his shifts. He has always had an open-door policy and does everything he can to be available to his team when needed, including working days or nights when staffing is short and there are holes that just can't be covered any other way. The sacrifices he has made to dedicate his time here to our team and our hospital range far and wide.
If there is one thing he's shown us, it is that positive reinforcement and recognition go a long way in the workplace. I truly believe saying thank you isn't enough for all of the things he does for our team, our hospital, and our community. We strive to be friends and family taking care of friends and family, and sometimes taking care of each other is simply saying: THANK YOU FOR ALL OF YOUR HARD WORK! It's recognized, appreciated, and should be awarded. Adam is a true DAISY Nurse Leader.
