Aileen was kind and took the time to go over everything that I was asking
My mom was admitted, after coming from the ER for covid-related breathing issues. She was initially sent to 4D where they attempted to keep her on high flow, but it just wasn’t happening and her o2 sats weren’t holding so the decision was made to place her on BiPAP. In order for her to go on BiPAP, they transferred her “across the hall”. That night after my dad got done visiting with her, I called and requested to speak to my mom's nurse to see how she was doing. Aileen was kind and took the time to go over everything that I was asking and told me that she was going to do whatever needed to be done to not have her get intubated. Unfortunately, around 9:30 the next morning the decision was made that it was in my mom’s best interest to be intubated and moved to the ICU. Later I found out that it was a rough night and multiple rapids were called on my mom. As a healthcare professional myself, I know when you have “that one patient” not only is it a long night for them but also for you. Not once did I get the impression that she was annoyed or irritated with my questions, actually I got the opposite. As stated above, she took the time to talk to me and reassured me of my worries and fears. She truly has a kind and caring soul and that is something that needs to be recognized. I have spent 16 years in healthcare and having a genuine person like her is hard to come by. I truly appreciate this individual, and I hope and pray she can maintain her sincerity and not let this pandemic or years of nursing and the way people treat each other and their caregivers get the best of them.
