Alexa (Lexie) was nominated for the care and compassion she provided one of our patients at the end of life. Right after being admitted to the hospital, this patient in critical care decompensated quickly and at that time the family learned their loved one had a very poor prognosis. The family made the decision to withdraw treatment and provide comfort care only. Lexie took care of this patient throughout the critical care stay, including the withdrawal of life support. Another nurse found Lexie tearful, sitting down quietly just holding the patent's hand. Lexie looked at our nurse and said, "I don't want her to die alone." We learned that Lexie had notified the family that death was imminent, but they were not able to come. Our nurse who nominated Lexie said she witnessed one of the most beautiful moments she has seen in nursing. She saw the amount of love and compassion that Lexie provided this patient in her last moments of life. She believes if the patient could speak, our patient would say that Lexie helped her to transition comfortably.
